Puerto Plata is situated on the North Coast of the island also known as the Amber Coast.
It was first discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1492 when he first saw the shimmering blue shoreline.
Christopher Columbus named the area the “Silver Port” and settled at La Isabela with a mixed community of Taino's (original inhabitants of the area) and Spaniards. He built the first church and his first home in the Americas here, it is a beautiful scenic area with pristine beaches and a breathtaking mountain backdrop.
Playa Dorada in Puerto Plata was the first area of the country to be developed for tourism it is a large area on the coast with many all-inclusive hotels build around an excellent 18 hole golf course. Because this is a tourist area there are many things to do in the area during the day including rum and cigar factory tours. Another big attraction in the area is Ocean World which also has a casino.
Much of the night life is centered around the Playa Dorada area which also has Kviar Disco and Casino offering poker nightly.
