Sosúa's growth really started when the dictator Rafael Trujillo agreed to accept 100,000 Jewish refugees from Germany during the second world war. Only 700-800 Jewish immigrants were actually able to make it to Sosúa to take part in the resettlement program. Upon arrival, every new Jewish settler was given 80 acres of land, 10 cows, a mule, and a horse. The Dominicans welcomed the Jewish settlers and over the years the community became a harmonious mix of Dominicans and Jewish families who intermarried and created whole new generations of Dominicans who shared blended cultures and new traditions. These Jewish settlers laid the groundwork for Sosúa to become a major international tourist destination.

Sosúa today is the ideal destination to escape from the resorts and holiday projects and feel the vibe of the Dominican’s way of life. Sosúa beach is Caribbean style with a typical Dominican feel. with an assortment of little Caribbean shacks offering food, drinks, cigars, souvenirs, sculptures, paintings and lots more. Each shack has a strip of beach, where you can lay on a beach bed, sit and drink, dance, enjoy the Dominican music or just enjoy the view over the bay Cocktails are served in the fruit and the beers are always ice cold.

Sosúa Bay is the best place for snorkeling and scuba diving in the region, the horse-shoe shaped bay holds the clearest and quietest waters of the Atlantic Ocean with more than 15 named dive sites in and around the bay, with depths between 20 and 130 feet, divers of all experiences can find what they are looking for, the bay is also perfect for snorkeling as the reefs almost reach the surface.

Sosúa had a thriving poker community with daily tournaments and cash games being offered in a number of different locations including Playa Chiquita Casino and Coral Reef Casino.
